Parents constantly ask "is my kid on track?" Here's the honest answer, mapped to the age groups that actually exist in junior golf. These ranges are for kids on a competitive development path — not recreational players, not future tour pros. The middle 50% of serious juniors.
Fundamentals, course time, fun. Stop measuring kids against PGA Tour stats — they're learning to compete, not optimize. One AJGA junior-am-style event per quarter is plenty.
First real competitive volume. U.S. Kids Teen, IJGT, FCWT regional events. Start logging stats — fairways, GIR, putts, up-and-downs. Don't track strokes gained yet; the data is too noisy.
The recruiting filter. AJGA qualifiers and Opens become the priority. Coaches start watching scoreboards now. A 16-year-old shooting 73 avg across 20 events is on every D1 short list.
Verbal commits happen here. AJGA Invitationals, national championships, top regional tour events. The gap between a 72 and a 70 scoring avg is the difference between a low-major D1 and a Power 5.

Most parents jump their kid to AJGA events too early. Each tier exists for a reason — you don't skip steps and survive. Here's how the ladder actually works.
This is where you learn to compete. Nobody cares about your score — you're building tournament habits: pace of play, rules etiquette, how to handle a bad front nine and not quit on the back. Play 15-20 events per year minimum.
Now you're playing 36-54 hole events against kids who practice every day. The gap between you and the leaders is almost always short game and course management, NOT ball striking. Every kid at this level can hit the ball. Very few can get up and down.
This is the first real filter. The difference between shooting 76 and 72 is not 4 strokes — it's 4 decisions. The kids who advance are the ones who lay up when they should lay up, take their medicine from the trees, and never make worse than bogey.
College coaches are walking with groups at these events. They're watching everything: your routine, your body language after a miss, how you interact with your playing partners. 5-under through 36 holes is the real benchmark.
US Junior Am, AJGA majors, Junior PLAYERS. If you're competing at this level, you don't need this guide. But for context: the kids here hit it 290+ off the tee, carry 67-68 scoring averages, and have played 50+ national-level events.
College coaches care about one thing more than anything: your competitive scoring average over the last 12-18 months. Here is what each range realistically translates to for recruiting.
* Based on AJGA competitive scoring averages. Your trend matters as much as your number — a player dropping from 76 to 72 in one year is more recruitable than a player who has been sitting at 72 for three years.
Most juniors track everything and learn nothing. These six stats explain 95% of the variance in scoring at the junior level. Get these right and your number drops. Ignore them and you grind for years with no progress.
55-65% to be a sub-75 player. 65-75% gets you to the 70-72 tier. Above 75% is college-roster territory.
GIR is the single highest-correlation stat to scoring. Two-putt every green you hit and you can't shoot worse than 72 on most setups.
50% at the junior level is good. 60% is excellent. Anything below 40% means your short game is bleeding strokes you'll never see.
This is the stat college coaches actually ask about. Ball-strikers are everywhere. Kids who get up and down 6 out of 10 times are genuinely rare.
1.80-1.90 is the realistic junior target. Under 1.80 means you're putting like a college player.
Total putts is a junk stat — it punishes good GIR numbers. Putts per GIR isolates actual putting performance from approach play.
55-65%. Above 70% is exceptional. Below 50% and you're hitting too many recovery shots to ever score consistently.
Driving is the most overrated stat at the junior level — but only if you're already at 55%+. Below that, fairway accuracy becomes the bottleneck.
More pars and fewer doubles is the goal. Aim for 70% of holes played at par or better, 0-1 double bogeys per round.
Average juniors make 2-4 doubles a round. Elite juniors make zero. Eliminating the big number is worth more than adding birdies.
When you hit a green, how often do you make birdie? 15-20% is solid. 25%+ is elite.
Tells you whether your iron play is leaving you makeable putts or 35-footers. Closely tied to proximity-to-hole on approach shots.
Walk onto any practice facility on a Saturday and you'll see 80% of juniors on the range hitting drivers. That's the inverse of what actually moves their scoring number. Here's the allocation that works.
Putting (20%), chipping/pitching (15%), bunkers and specialty shots (10%). Most juniors do the inverse — and it's why they plateau at 76.
60-130 yard shots. This is where pros separate from amateurs and where college recruits separate from club players. Hit to specific targets, never to a generic flag.
Specific clubs, specific targets, club rotations. No 7-iron grinding sessions. If you're not changing clubs every 3-5 balls, you're wasting reps.
9 holes solo with 2 balls, skins games, practice rounds at unfamiliar courses. This is the most underweighted bucket in junior golf — and the one that actually transfers to tournaments.

The instructor relationship is the most expensive and most consequential decision in junior development — and most families get it wrong. Here's what actually works, what to spend, and when to walk away.
Weekly lessons are a waste of money for most juniors. The kid never gets time to ingrain anything. Every 2-3 weeks in-season, once a month off-season is the sweet spot for serious juniors. Elite kids see their coach 1-2x/month plus video reviews.
A 15-minute Loom or V1 video review every 7-10 days is often more effective than monthly in-person sessions. You stay accountable, the coach catches drift early, and you don't burn $150 + a 90-minute drive for a 45-minute lesson.
Quality junior coaching runs $100-$200/hr in most markets, $250-$400/hr for nationally-known instructors. Total annual spend for a serious junior: $3,000-$8,000 in coaching alone. Add launch monitor, fitness, and travel and you're at $20-$40k/year easily.
You've worked on the same swing change for 6+ months with no measurable improvement. Your coach can't explain WHY a change works. They don't track stats or scores. They blame your effort instead of their teaching. Loyalty is great — until it's costing you strokes.
Useful starting around age 13-14 once swing mechanics are established. Track club speed, ball speed, smash factor, spin, attack angle, and dynamic loft. A junior who knows their carry numbers cold is a junior who shoots lower on unfamiliar courses.
Smash factor (driver: 1.45+), spin rate (driver: 2,200-2,800 rpm), attack angle (driver: +2 to +4 degrees), carry distance dispersion (target: ±8 yards on a 7-iron). Everything else is noise until these are dialed.
Equipment is where families burn the most money for the least return. A 12-year-old does not need a tour-spec driver. A 16-year-old absolutely needs a proper wedge setup. Here's the schedule that matches the physical and developmental reality of the player.
Properly cut-down kids' clubs (U.S. Kids, Tour Edge HT Max-J). Fit by height bracket. Replace every 12-18 months as the kid grows. Don't buy adult clubs cut down — the head weights are wrong and they'll grow into bad habits.
First real fitting. Static + dynamic launch monitor fit. Game-improvement irons (TaylorMade Stealth HD, Ping G-series, Callaway Paradym X). Soft shafts (regular flex), graphite irons if swing speed is under ~85 mph driver. Replace shafts as speed grows, not the whole set.
First adult-spec fitting. Player's-distance or player's irons depending on dispersion. Stiff flex once driver speed is 95+ mph. This is when wedges become a real conversation — bounce/grind selection matters now. Spend money here, not on a new driver.
Tour-level fitting. Combo sets are common (player's irons in long, blades in short). Spec sheets get serious — lie angle, length, swing weight, shaft frequency. Your wedge setup should be a science: 4-degree gaps, matched bounces for your turf, fresh grooves every 60-80 rounds.
Coaching + fitness + competitive event entries should be 70%+ of your annual junior golf budget. Equipment should be ~15%. The kid with the best fitness coach and the most tournament reps will always beat the kid with the newest driver. Always.
Burnout doesn't show up as a kid quitting. It shows up as a kid going through the motions for 18 months while their scoring average creeps up two strokes. By the time a parent notices, the damage is done. These are the early warnings.
The most reliable burnout signal. A motivated kid making the same swing change shows progress — even slow progress. A burnt-out kid plateaus or regresses despite practice time. This is the moment to recalibrate, not double down.
When a kid who used to text you about Sunday's leaderboard suddenly couldn't tell you who won — that's the canary in the coal mine. Internal motivation drives improvement. External pressure plateaus it.
Phone-in range sessions. No targets, no club rotation, no scorecard, no curiosity. The kid is going through the motions to satisfy a parent. Pull them off the range and play 9 holes instead. Always.
Stomach issues on tournament mornings, irritability the week of an event, post-round emotional crashes that last days. This is real and it compounds fast. A sports psychologist is not a luxury at this point — it's the intervention.
If you're chasing tournament entries, booking lessons, and tracking the kid's stats while they couldn't tell you their own scoring average — the kid is along for the ride. That's not a development plan. That's a project. And it ends badly.
